Street Ethics Code: The Rat

I am going to attempt to correct the course of the ship. In my humble opinion the term "Rat" has been perverted beyond recognition. An elderly grandmother calling the cops because the kids selling crack in front of her house had a shootout IS NOT a Rat. She is not the target for retaliation.

So let's lay out exactly what a Rat is:

  1. A Rat is a person that commits a crime WITH you, and when he gets caught gives YOU up.
  2. A Rat is a rival criminal who gives you up in an attempt to crush you for his own gains.
  3. A Rat is a rival criminal who gets caught and gives you up to save his own ass.
  4. A Rat is a square that calls the cops to deal with what he should be able to deal with himself. An unconnected man cannot deal with a gang of AK47 toting violent drug dealers.
  5. A Rat is NOT someone that watches the tapes of his accomplice giving him up for THEIR crime and you setting the record straight.
That said, there are still far too many Rats in the world... But conversely there are too many people being labeled as Rats that are NOT Rats. I thought right now was the opportune time to set the record straight and clarify exactly what a Rat was.

I hope this public service announcement makes it to the ears of those that need it most.
